Through the Hong Kong Education and
Manpower Bureau's (HKEMB)
¡§School-Business Partnership Programme¡¨, the Hong Kong Fur Federation organized a special seminar for primary and
secondary school teachers, in November. ¡§Fur & Ecology:
A Canadian Perspective¡¨ was presented by Mr. Alan
Herscovici, a published author and Executive Vice-President of Fur Council of Canada. The
seminar, part of a strong new educational outreach by the HKFF, was also promoted by the
Canadian Consulate in Hong Kong. The seminar included discussion of fur trade history and
socio-economic contributions, and showed how fur animals are used to illustrate ecology
and sustainable-use principles in Canadian schools. Mr. Herscovici's presentation has been
uploaded to HKEMB's website, allowing teachers to easily access seminar notes. ¡§Several teachers said they would have conveyed a much more negative image of
the fur trade to their students if they had not attended the seminar. This confirms the
importance of reaching out to teachers and other opinion leaders,¡¨
